Excerpts from Orfeo ed Euridice by Christoph Willibald Gluck
 
Frost Opera Theater is pleased to join Frost Choral Studies in this shared program.  Soloists and chorus unite to perform excerpts from Gluck’s masterwork of the Orpheus myth that revolutionized operatic storytelling in 1762.

L'enfant et les sortileges
(The Child and the Enchantments)

Music by Maurice Ravel
Libretto by Colette
 
This timeless masterpiece from 1925 by Ravel, with a libretto by Colette, and originally choreographed by George Balanchine, tells the story of a mischievous child who must suffer the fantastical consequences of his wicked actions.
His very home comes to life in order to teach him a lesson, along with an opportunity for redemption.
 
The opera will be sung in French with English subtitles in a chamber orchestration for two pianos, cello, and flute.

Following the unbridled passions in his breakout opera Cavalleria Rusticana, Pietro Mascagni turned his attention to a simple love story, set to his most beautiful music written for soprano and tenor, here for Suzel and Fritz as they discover their love for each other.

What ensues when three opera singers compete in a call to audition for Der Shauspieldirektor (The Impresario)?  You'll find out in this opera play with dialogue and music which Mozart himself wrote for an opera competition in 1786!
